Hi all,

I'm having a issue with pppd connection over UMTS.
I can dial into the server and authenticate but afterwards ir dies. I've attached my config files for ppp.

Heres the output of the connection:

Anyone has any ideas?

Thanks a lot

I'm having a issue with pppd connection over UMTS.
UMTS is strange. It does the actual link authentication during IPCP
negotiation, rather than during PPP's authentication phase.

As a result, the authentication results are a fabrication: the server
reports "success," but doesn't actually check anything until IP is
brought up.

rcvd [CHAP Success id=0x1 ""]
... your credentials are not correct, or perhaps you haven't set up
UMTS Internet service with your provider.
Post by Ether.pt
sent [IPCP ConfReq id=0x12 <addr 0.0.0.0> <ms-dns1 0.0.0.0> <ms-dns2 0.0.0.0>]
rcvd [IPCP ConfNak id=0x12 <ms-dns1 10.11.12.13> <ms-dns2 10.11.12.14> <ms-wins1 10.11.12.13> <ms-wins2 10.11.12.14>]
Note that the peer provided some DNS addresses (via the Microsoft-
proprietary IPCP extensions), but didn't provide any IP address for
you to use. That's a fairly good indication that your credentials
(authentication data) are not right.

Hi,

The odd part on all of this, is that if I use the HUAWEI E220 with the same configuration it works just fine. But with this Novatel U830 (I think this is the one ... I'not with the laptop right now) this is what happens.

I had the same problem before when I was using the the wrong phone number with the E220. But since it works in E220 shouldn#t it work with this one as well???? Or maybe there is the driver or init string different for the novatel? Even when I'm doing modem commands with tip I get results.

But here comes another odd thing. Changing the sim card to another operator, I'm still able to issue modem commands, but the output is exactly has vodafone. which is odd... once again in E220 doesn't happen :S

odd thing right?

Thanks

If it works with one phone but not another, then I would suspect that
the provider has some sort of registration mechanism for the phones --
you'd have to contact the provider to find out why one works and the
other doesn't.

Yes, it's possible that the Novatel device requires a different init
string. No, I have no real idea what that should be (it sounds like
you need a technical reference manual for the device), but see below.

In searching the net on Novatel, it seems that a lot of people running
Linux are having similar issues.

What do your chat scripts look like? The best advice I've seen so far
(from doing some google searches) is to include the following before
the ATD command:

"" "ATZ"
OK "AT+CMEE=1"
OK 'AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet"'
